It was the summer of 2008, when I first dared to take a sip of camel milk. I was staying in my Aunt’s house up country with my older and younger brother. My older brother was enrolled in uni. He would always joke with me and my younger brother about trying camel milk. I was put off by the idea. One day my older brother came home with a plastic bag full of milk. At first, I had no idea what that was. I was surprised to see milk in a clear plastic bag. He told me it was camel milk and your going to try it. I tried every possible avenue out of this ordeal, but to no avail. I had no choice but to try it. He poured it into two cups, one for me, and the other for my younger brother. I tried it first. I was confused by the smoky taste and was not a fan. I didn't think I would ever try it again.

Fast forward 7 years to 2014. I  went to the rural areas of the country for a few weeks to visit family in a small town. I heard their where camel herders in the area. So, I decided to stay with them for a few days to experience their way of life. I got the opportunity to watch them milk the camels. I had a bad experience with camel milk in the past, but I decided to give it another shot. The fact that I got to see the camels get milked built my confidence. It can’t get any fresher than that. I gave it one sip, and it was amazing. It didn’t have any smoky, burnt taste. This was milk. I found out later on that camel milk brought to the cities are smoked with charcoal to preserve it. This is what gives it that weird smoky taste. From there on out, I’ve always searched for camel milk that hasn’t been smoked. It tastes way better, and its way more authentic.
